That is the question for you fine, feathered friends, why music?
Why is music education an integral part of your education in school? What moments from "Mr. Hollands Opus" spoke to you about music education in America? Please expand a bit further on this and speak from the heart - I really would love to hear exactly why you choose to spend 45 minutes (and for some of you - another 45 minutes!) making music during your school day.
I'm very excited to read your responses :D
Have a great break!

Without the, what, like 90 minutes or more of music I get every day, plus the stuff i listen to and sing on my own I think i would most likely explode. Music is the one way I can totally express myself without feeling like an idiot all of the time. I always feel like i cant really express myself because though i talk a lot...half the time i feel like a big idiot for talking that much...lol.
In Mr.Holland's Opus the part where he played/sang for his son was the part that really spoke to me because idk what i would do if I was deaf. It also reminded me of times when my dad would sing to me or we would sing together...that's what I grew up with, and it's not very prevalent in my life very much anymore...so i make up for it with 90 min of singing each and every day...lol
That's pretty much a very wordy explanation (big suprise) for my "music geekness" lol
I hope u all had a great xmas...i cant wait to see u all again and sing with u!

well music is the only what to show true emotion. sure poetry can do show emotion but it written down you cant just write down music and have some old lady go thats so beautiful. you have to put your soul into it. all of the greatest artist and composers know that is the true reason for music. jimi hendrix said blues is easy to play but hard to feel. (and yes i did just quote hendrix) thats pretty much the only quote that someone has to know if they want to get into music i think. songs can also be written about anything. if you try to force music it will never sound right. you could sing the right notes but if you dont put soul into the song it will never sound right. another reason why i like blues music. all of the artist get it.
music is deff needed in schools because like it was said in the movie without it there is nothing for us to learn. that is the part in the movie that really struck me. i chose to spend the time with you because without music i would ether go insane and/or get so bored i would become a zombie.
The whole movie spoke to me about music. I think the reason why we should be able to have music is so that we can actually learn things. If we aren't learning about music there really is nothing for us to learn about. Music is apart of our everyday histroy, without it we would be learning about boring things. ~Kim
music is a feeling, or feelings that evoke emotion(s), music is feelings that is evoked through a string of notes, who would ever think that notes come together in a harmonious and melodious way would create such emotions. music to me creates emotions and feelings for example, music creates a serene atmosphere, it can get us pumped up for exercising, it can help us to work better, and it can relax and rejuvenate our souls from within. music is a science, an unexplained science of notes and measures that when you just listen to that science it becomes appeasable to the ear and causes a reaction.
i spend my time making music for these reasons, i believe that music is like a science and to fully understand it, we must immerse ourselves it to it, swim in it and to sing creates a feeling of happiness and tranquility inside myself. in the movie, Mr. Hollond spoke to me when he finally figured out his path to teaching his students with passion and understanding of them, and the part where he came to terms with his son, and sang to him, this part moved me. - Maria
Why music? why not? the world exists in opposites, and with out these opposites, we cannot exist. everyone in the world experiences music in one form or another, whether it be a rythmic heartbeat, or a full phledged symphony of instruments! music education is important for one simple reason. ITS NOT IMPORTANT! all throughout our lives we have been taught the important subjects in school are math, science, history, and english. those are our core classes, but every other class is also held to this high standard, except for music education. Therefore, it is the most important thing in our entire schedule to learn. because it is the opposite of the norm. love, is not the opposite of hate, indifference is. just like silence is not the opposite of sound. music is the opposite of sound. sound can mean anything, even silence because it is just a lack of sound. music is everything. anyone can look at a skyscraper in new york city and be amazed at our own constructions. but the person who stops, to look at the tree on the corner, knowing that once, it was just a seed, sees something more. music is everywhere. you just hav to see it. not hear it. which is why the siren blaring in the parade is what spoke to me. it tells me that, yes, his child is deaf. but even so, he will experience the blessing that is music. music is important to me because i see more than notes and lines on a page. i see something worth far more. i see life. and for the past 12 years i have made my life out of music. the question isn't why music. the question is, why not music?
These responses are AMAZING and have on several occasions brought tears to my eyes - bravo!
Mrs. Flateau
well im glad we can make u cry so well Mrs. Flateau but im pretty sure thats not wat we were going for. woah the little verification thing is besing creepy.
Music is such an important subject in school because it teaches us that there are different ways to express ourselves other than writing or plain speaking. Also, when singing or playing an instrument you can get a point across without being so open or obvious.
The part in "Mr. Hollands Opus" that spoke to me most was when the red haired girl was going to give up the clarinet. It shows that music is much more difficult than speaking and writing. It takes time to learn a completely different language that doesn't include written letters.
I chose to take chorus because I had a feeling that it would be the only class where I would be encouraged to be really loud. I also chose this class because my family isn't very music oriented (meaning they have no rythm.) So this is my way of being the one that can sing and play an instrument and show them that I can do something that not everyone else is doing and do it well.
I don't quite know what to say....music is in my blood. I don't know what I'd do without it.
i think it is important because it is all around us. we need to know what is in each song and why it is there. then with this you can help let out emotions in different forms. this works for me and i can do it by myself and not have anyone know about what i'm feeling. it spoke to me when he started to play match music from back in the day to now. this was great because it shows that we have a lot in common from then to now. it was great though when he got the girl to play the claranet with her feelings not just to do it.
Well, I didn't exactly see all of "Mr. Holland's Opus", but to me, music is a way of life. My answer to "Why music?" isn't so much an answer as it is a statement. Without music, I would not be who I am today. Not to say music turned me into the crazed lunatic many associate my name with, but it turned me into who I am as a person. If music wasn't around, I probably wouldn't be in this school, wear the clothes I do, heck, I probably wouldn't even have been born. Everywhere I look I see a song waiting to unfold. Every day when I'm sitting in class, staring lifelessly at some notes or a TV screen, my head fills with lyrics. This explanation may seem a bit strange, but I mean, C'mon, look who it's coming from. So, as for a direct answer to the question "Why music?", I don't have one. I probably never will. All I know is that without music, having life wouldn't be the same as living.
Like James said, we're taught science, math, english, history... things like that. without wiggle room to do our own thing, we would be a lot more unhappy and stressed out. basically, every difficult thing in our lives needs to be countered by something good, which is proved by music alongside the core subjects.
In "Mr. Holland's Opus", the moments that spoke most deeply to me about music education in America were when he got fed up with the students in his music appreciation class because they didn't pay attention and couldn't connect what they listened to with what previous composers had written. It was fantastic to see him showing the students how even in music, history repeats itself, and we borrow from the past generations all the time. Another moment was when he took aside Gertrude Lang (for those of you who don't absorb names easily--the redhead who didn't play clarinet well) and took her knowledge of how to play the clarinet and made her add in her soul, which transformed her ability instantly. It shows how only passionate nutjob teachers who understand music on all levels are the most qualified to teach us music because it is something that they feel.
Music education an important part of the education we receive in school because, let's face it, not everyone is good at everything. Music is there for people who can't draw or paint or sculpt. For the hopeless people (just kidding!) who can't sing, play an instrument, or draw, paint or sculpt, then there's gym, math, English, science, history, etc. You do not need to be good at making music to enjoy it, however. Everyone listens to music and has their own preferences, from Alternative to Pop to Jazz to Classical to Screamo Metal to Emo to Country, and then the freaky people (like me) who can stand to listen to anything and everything and enjoy most of it.
I personally choose to spend 45 minutes of my day making music because what person who joins a group of people who also enjoy singing and making beautiful music don't feel a certain emotion when singing a song? Singing is a way to communicate with others how you feel without actually having to say anything to them directly and without having to worry about them judging you. I was blessed with a voice that many people don't hear but find pleasurable, and I like sharing it with people because it brings joy to them. I don't like to say that I like that people are in awe the first time they hear my voice because the quality is a little surprising, because it sounds vain. But if people like you, or something about you, it does give you a personal satisfaction, and self-assurance, like you can do something to make people happy and make yourself feel good about yourself for.
Music is one of the most important parts of my life. Different songs go along with certain emotions and experiences and ideas like they were made just for you to relate to, and some evoke emotions in you that you've never felt in a certain way before, which make you realize the range of emotions that you are capable of possessing. Music can shape you in ways that other things cannot.
I feel like music gives me super-sensory perception in emotion, because some songs that I listen to or sing overwhelm me with an emotion that I probably didn't have in the instant before I started the song. It also allows me to ponder other things in my life and induces epiphanies about things that I hadn't thought about before. To me, music is the one thing that I will learn the most from in my life.
i have chorus in my schedule because i love music. there's no rhyme or reason. all my other classes require lots of effort and chorus doesn't. but when it does call for effort i'd rather give the effort to chorus than any other class. :D
the whole movie spoke to me about music edu. in america. it's a story of one perosn's experience with music. he doesn't just experience it, he teaches it as well.
have a good day everyone!! ashleigh
ps....do u think lauren could write a little more....slacker huh? lol GREAT JOB EVERYONE!! :D
ps again...where's your reason mrs. flateau? :D
Ashleigh you make a good point! I should offer up my reason for why music is essential.
I made a comparison during Mr. Hollands Opus that some of you may have heard and I think it truly encapsulates why music education is such a vital element in learning and life in general:
"Think of a house - it has things it needs to stand, a sturdy foundation, strong walls, thick floors and a sealed roof. In school, the accepted norm of things needed for survival in learning are the "core" subjects, math, science, reading, writing. These things in both scenarios will keep you safe, provide you with what you need to survive, and ensure that you can continue along existing in our world.
Though survival through the basic means may be enough for some, many will find that though their home is a haven from the elements, without anything inside it's drab and bleak. An educational experience without creative outlet can be much like that for many students - stifling and disheartening.
Music and the arts in schools are like furnishings in your home. Hanging a beautiful painting in your living room, music ringing through the halls, all these things give us pleasure and enjoyment in our daily lives - and inspire us to continue on with our lives."
So basically - why music? To me, if I couldn't sing, it'd be like coming home to a perfect structure, filled with barren space everyday.
Mrs. Flateau :)
AND Lauren I LOVED your response - Ashleigh is obviously jealous. Try posting a picture of a pretty little baby cow next time and she'll be nicer.
yo...for some reason my comments are NOT posting. grrrr... and u watched me type it up during lunch ms flateau sooo...idk wats going on.
but anyway, now that i have to type it all over again, music is the most important part of my life. id be lost or dead without it. you can show so much through a song that you can't anywhere else. it's the most important part of culture and society. you can trace music back through many years, back before life itself. music is everywhere.
the part of the movie that spoke to me was the part in which the teacher traced music from today to music from years ago.
I LOVE MUSIC <3
-heather lynn

excuse ME!!! i am not jealous!!!.....how can you be jealous of an individual opinion....i'm sure you can, but it's just absurd....and i'm definitely NOT absurd!!! lol you (mrs. flateau) just can't interpret things correctly!!! AND i would love to point out that mrs. flateau did the same thing i did to lauren, but she switched the order of sarcasm and true niceness. :D
thanks a bunch for putting your opinion!
ashleigh
AND i L-O-V-E the C-O-W lauren!!!!! thanks for putting it on here as much as you could.....and a "special" thanks to mrs. flateau for giving lauren the suggestion of it!!!! lol
